I recently watched amazingly inspirational Ted Talk by Janine Shepherd who in 1986 was hit by a truck during her training for Winter Olympics. She was told that she would never walk again. Today not only can she walk, but she also is a successful pilot! I cried and laughed as I watched it, she is an amazing motivational speaker and the message she was conveying was very powerful. If you set yourself a goal, you can achieve it by taking small steps. Even if everyone around you tells you that it is impossible, if you put your mind to it, you can make it happen.
One of the The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey is “begin with the end in mind”, which means that in order to achieve the greatest success you need to know what is your destination so that you can take the right steps to get you there.
When I work with my clients, there are no barriers and no limits to what they can have or who they want to be. I ask them to imagine that perfect place where there are no money issues, no boundaries, no limits, I let them feel what it is like to have or be who they really want. With that in mind we work through identifying steps (small goals) that will take them closer to that place they imagined.
If you want to succeed in achieving your goals then you need to follow the 5 steps below:
Step 1:
Make sure you take a moment to imagine what is it that you truly want to get out of life, what you want to achieve? What do you see? How does it feel? What can you hear? What are you doing? Allow yourself to feel as if you already achieved it, allow yourself to experience it with all your senses.
– With that image in mind, set a date you want to achieve it by (this is your long term goal).
Step 2:
Write down all the things you already did to get there. You will be surprised to find out that you have probably already taken some steps in the right direction.
Step 3:
Think of other things you can do? Is there someone who could help you? Don’t be shy, write anything that comes to mind. If you get stuck, imagine that your friend asked you that same question, what would you advise them to do?
Step 4:
Look at the list and choose one thing you want to start working on straight away. Set yourself a date you want to achieve it by. You may choose to start on few things at the same time. There are few conditions that need to be met though:
– it is ok to choose more than one task if it is something that can be achieved very easily, however you need to make sure you stay realistic about what can be achieved in a certain timeframe (day, week, month).
– ensure that you do ideally no more than one thing from your list every day,
this way you won’t have an excuse that you have too much to do.
If you choose to work on your goals without support of a coach, I suggest you ask a friend or someone you are close to check up on you to ensure you are taking those steps you set yourself to.
Step 5:
Get in to action!
Having a great quality life can only be achieved if we take the right steps to get there otherwise you just drift hoping that something amazing will happen. It hardly ever does, You have to make it happen.
