Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo has requested her pictures to be removed from L’Oreal’s campaign in response to the company’s firing of Munroe Bergdorf.
The transgender model was sacked from L’Oreal’s True Match campaign after writing a Facebook post labeling all white people as racists.
Since Bergdorf’s sacking, many have come out in support, with the hashtag #IStandWithMunroe being shared thousands of times across Twitter.
Soon after, Amfo took to Instagram in a post of support for Bergdorf, announcing that she was stepping down from the campaign.
It began: “Not even a week ago I was proud to announce that I was to be in the same campaign as Munroe.”
“A trans woman of colour who @lorealmakeup hired to sell make up because of who she is.“
She continued: “Who she is, a woman who wrote a nuanced post on institutional racism and white supremacy in relation to Charlottesville and how the foundations of those heinous ideals trickle in to every facet of our society.”
“A newspaper took her post out of context and span it as “a rant” ? with the most basic of dog whistle politics to rally people against her.”
“She has now been dropped from the campaign because L’Oreal feel that she is “at odds with our values”…..If she’s not ‘worth it’ anymore, I guess I’m not either. #IStandWithMunroe“
Bergdorf – who was the brand’s first openly transgender representative – was dropped by L’Oréal following a Daily Mail article, which accused the model of posting a racist rant to her Facebook page.
This week, Bergdorf spoke about L’Oréal’s decision, telling The Guardian:
“I don’t regret what I said. I’m an activist. Being an activist means calling people out, not just saying what everyone else is saying and what everyone else wants to think and upholding the common consensus.”
“L’Oréal knew that when they hired me.”
